Satrancın genç ustasıThe young master of chess

Şanal, “Satrancı, hayatımın her anında yaşıyorum diyebilirim.

Satranç her şeydir’ diyor.

Vahap Şanal, a national chess player from İzmir who is also a student of Yaşar University, carries on his chess life with more success. Awarded the title of “International Master” at the age of 14 and the title of “Grand Master” last July, Vahap Şanal is the youngest chess player from Turkey to be awarded these titles. Şanal won the Turkish Chess Championship organized by the Turkish Chess Federation, on top of his previous national and international championships.

TURKEY’S YOUNGEST GRAND MASTER

Vahap Şanal started playing chess when he was 6 years old in kindergarten. When he realized that he enjoyed playing chess with his sister more as he improved himself and got better at it, he continued with getting training in chess from chess teacher Abdullah İlhan. Coming in fourth in the 8-year-old age group of the 2006 World Championship, he subsequently won third place at the World Schools Chess Championship in 2007 and world championship at the age of 10, along with his national achievements. So, he also started to compete in the national team. Şanal became the youngest International Master of Turkey when he was awarded the “International Master” title at the age of 14.  Representing Turkey at international tournaments, he also became the youngest Grand Master at the age of 18 as the 9th Grand Master in Turkey.

DETERMINED TO BE AMONG THE TOP 50

Expressing that chess is a life style which requires at least as much professionalism as any other sport, Şanal sets his objective as being among the world’s best 50 chess players. “It is possible to say that chess is in every part of my life. Chess is life itself, they are totally similar. First of all, there is no such thing as solving the game, just like in life itself. Life is full of surprises. You can constantly improve yourself and explore new moves. Of course, it requires devotion and real professionalism. The tournaments we take part in are international ones at high levels. We have to have a regular life, sleep and eat well,” said Şanal.

Expressing that the legend chess player Bobby Fischer is his favorite player as well as role-model for himself, Vahap Şanal continued saying, “He is one of the greatest chess players the world has seen up to now. He is recognized as ‘the person who proved to the whole world that chess is just as competitive as football, as exciting as a duel to the death, as well as an activity with aesthetic values.’  Another legend is Anatoly Karpov, who says ‘Chess is sport, art, science. Chess is everything.’ That’s exactly what I think. Above all, it is a game which cannot be solved and simply end. There are billions of moves a chess player may possibly come across during a game. All of the games which have been played up to this date are different from each other. Chess is a great passion for me.”

Admitted to Yaşar University’s Department of International Logistics Management, Şanal is studying at the English prep-class this year and managing school and tournaments at the same despite the busy schedule he has. Competing in various age categories of the national team and taking part in world championships, international tournaments and olympics so far, Vahap Şanal also stated that he is working to qualify for the national team in the adults’ category.
