Yaşar Üniversitesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümü Araştırma Görevlisi ve doktora öğrencisi Damla Kızılay, Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin (ABD) en saygın burs programı olarak kabul edilen Fulbright Doktora Tezi Araştırma Bursunu kazanan 13 kişiden biri olmayı başardı. Damla Kızılay, endüstri mühendisliğinde ABD’deki en başarılı üniversiteler arasında yer alan Michigan Üniversitesinde, alanında birçok ödülün sahibi olan Prof. Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck’le çalışacak.
Lisans ve yüksek lisans eğitimini tamamladığı halen de doktorasına devam ettiği Yaşar Üniversitesi Mühendislik Fakültesi Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölümünde Araştırma Görevlisi olarak çalışan Damla Kızılay, 60 yıldır süren ABD’nin en saygın burs programlarından Fulbright Doktora Tezi Araştırma Bursu kazandı. Türkiye’den yüzlerce başvuru arasından 13 kişiye verilen bursu kazanan Kızılay, ayrıca, kazananlar arasında İzmir’de üniversite eğitimi alan tek aday oldu.
ÜNLÜ BİLİMİNSANINDAN DERS ALACAK
Burs kapsamında, 9 ay süreyle Michigan Üniversitesinde Prof. Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck’le çalışacağını belirten Damla Kızılay, “Bu bursu kazanmak gurur verici. Prof. Hentenryck, bilgisayar bilimleri, yapay zeka, elektrik mühendisliği, optimizasyon, yöneylem araştırması ve lojistik gibi alanlarda çok disiplinli çalışmalar yürütüyor. Optimizasyonda bir amaç maksimum kar veya minimum maliyeti sağlayacak üretim miktarını kısıtlara bağlı olarak tespit etmek. Günümüzün bilgisayar teknolojisi kadar güncel bir kavram olan optimizasyon kavramı, çok çeşitli endüstri kesimlerinde uygulanıyor. Benim tezimde uygulamak istediğim konu, optimizasyon ve kısıt programlama modelleme yöntemi. Prof. Hentenryck, birçok kısıt programlama sisteminin kurucusu. Kurucusu olduğu sistemlerden biri de IBM’in bir ürünü olarak kullanılan OPL- optimizasyon programlama dili programı. Hocanın laboratuvarında, konteyner terminallerindeki rıhtım ve saha optimizasyonu için kısıt programlama uygulaması üzerinde çalışacağım” dedi.
ÜNİVERSİTE EĞİTİMİNİ İZMİR’DE ALAN TEK KİŞİ
Kızılay’ın doktora tez danışmanı ve Endüstri Mühendisliği Bölüm Başkanı Doç. Dr. Deniz Türsel Eliiyi, “Lisans ve lisans üstü eğitimini Yaşar Üniversitesinde alan Araştırma Görevlimiz Damla Kızılay’ın adaylar arasında İzmir’de üniversite eğitimi alan tek kişi olması gurur verici. Ama aynı zamanda, danışmanı olduğum doktora öğrencimin, ABD’nin, özellikle endüstri mühendisliği alanında zirvede yer alan bir okulda, alanında birçok ödüle sahip, yaptığı çalışmalarla literatüre geçmiş bir hocanın laboratuvarına kabul edilerek katılıyor olması da mutluluk verici” diye konuştu.
FULBRİGHT BURSU NEDİR?
Fulbright Eğitim Komisyonu, 60 yıldır Türk ve Amerikalı öğrenci, akademisyen, öğretmen ve profesyonellere kültürel değişime katkıda bulunmak amacıyla burs sağlıyor. Bu program dahilinde Türk öğrenciler Amerika’da yüksek lisans, doktora ve doktora tezi araştırması yapmak için başvuruda bulunuyor. Bursu kazanan öğrencilere programa göre bir ya da iki yıl boyunca 50 bin dolara kadar eğitim desteği sağlanıyor.
A SUCCESS WIDENING UP TO THE USA FROM İZMİR
Damla Kızılay, Research Assistant and a Ph.D. candidate at Yaşar University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, became one of the thirteen grantees of the Fulbright Ph.D. Dissertation Research Grant, which is recognized as the most prestigious grant program in the US. Damla Kızılay will pursue her doctoral studies at Michigan University, which is one of the most achieved universities of the US in the field of industrial engineering. During her research in the States, Kızılay will study together with Prof. Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck, who also holds numerous awards in the field.
Earning her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the Department of Industrial Engineering within Yaşar University’s Faculty of Engineering where she is also doing her Ph.D. and working as a research assistant, Damla Kızılay has been given the chance to study as a part of the United States’ most prestigious grant program of the last sixty years, the Fulbright Ph.D. Dissertation Research Grant. Kızılay became one of the thirteen grantees picked among the hundreds of applications made from all corners of Turkey, and was also the only grantee who earned her degrees from a university based in İzmir.
THE RESEARCH TO BE CONDUCTED WITH RENOWNED SCIENTIST
Stating that she will be studying with Prof. Dr. Pascal Van Hentenryck at Michigan University for nine months as part of the grant program, Kızılay continued: “It is an honor for me to be granted this scholarship. Prof. Hentenryck has been carrying out multi-disciplinary studies on computer science, artificial intelligence, electrical engineering, optimization, operations research, and transportation. The main goal of optimization is to determine the exact amount of production that will either get the highest profit possible or the minimum cost, based on some constraints. The concept of optimization is as topical as today’s computer technology, and being implemented in various industrial fields. The subject I want to focus on for my dissertation is optimization and constraint programming modeling method. Prof. Hentenryck is the founder of numerous constraint programming systems. Among the systems of which Prof. Hentenryck is the founder is the optimization programming language -OPL, which is currently used as an IBM product. At the professor’s laboratory, I will be studying on constraint programming for the optimization of docks and sites at container terminals.”
THE ONLY GRANTEE FROM İZMİR
Assoc. Prof. Deniz Türsel Eliiyi, Kızılay’s dissertation advisor and the Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering said, “It is an honor for us that Research Assistant Damla Kızılay is the only grantee who earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from an İzmir-based university, Yaşar University. As her dissertation advisor, I am also happy that my student has been admitted to the top university of the US especially in the field of industrial engineering, and that my student will be studying with an academic who has numerous awards in the field and whose studies are precious for the literature.”
ABOUT THE FULBRIGHT GRANT PROGRAM
The Fulbright Commission has been supporting Turkish and American graduate students, academics, teachers and professionals through grants to enhance the cultural exchange between Turkey and the US. As part of the program, Turkish students apply for grants to get their master’s and doctoral degrees and to do their dissertation researches in the USA. Depending on the respective program, grantees are granted up to fifty thousand dollars for their studies for a study period of one to two years.
