Do it yourself, sell it yourself

DIY, which stands for “Do It Yourself”, has been gaining popularity across the world as well as in Turkey. Basically described as “handmade hobby products”, DIY has attracted immense attention recently for being a remarkable income channel.

People who produce “do-it-yourself” products in their spare times at home can get actual income by way of marketing their products on social media. One-hundred-million Google search results present over two billion posts on such popular social media channels like Instagram and YouTube with the hashtag of “DIY”. The number of users following these posts is spelled in the billions as well.

Anyone can do it

Initially starting in the 1950s with people producing at their own homes and garages in Northern America and England where labor costs are high, the DIY trend subsequently became popular among those interested in handcraft, and extended to a wider community including inventors, designers, engineers, housewives and people with hobbies. The do-it-yourself products are not just limited to pillows out of old clothes, furniture out of waste wood, vases out of glass jars, puppets out of old socks, and robots out of broken radios or televisions. It is even possible to come across cars and even planes made out of junk.

New opportunities for entrepreneurs

Göker Gülay, academic member of the Department of Public Relations and Advertising within Yaşar University’s Faculty of Communication, expressed that people value the products they make with their own hands more, and therefore price these products higher. Stressing that people can create a market on social media platforms such as YouTube and Instagram for their products they produce at home, Gülay also stated that it is quite possible to get an income worth the amount of minimum wage every month.

How can you be active on social media with your DIY projects?

  • Pick your field of interest based on your skills.
  • Determine the keywords for the projects you are interested in, and search these keywords online.
  • Determine the tools and materials suitable for your project after doing some research on some resources.
  • Arrange a setting equipped with the necessary materials for your safety (glasses, gloves, etc.).
  • If you have an intention to share your project with other people on social media, take pictures and shoot videos of the production process step by step.
  • Your posts should be understandable and worth watching so that you can have a wider population of followers. That’s why you also have to improve yourself in the method (photography, video shooting, etc.) you will be using to record this process.
  • Post the photos and videos on social media using the appropriate tags, hashtags and key words; and keep posting periodically to have a continuity and keep your followers’ attention.
