Young scholar ranked first in Turkey

Competing at TÜBİTAK 2241 Undergraduate Degree Thesis for Private Sector Competition with a fire detection system that uses artificial intelligence, Mert Nakıp, Research Assistant at Yaşar University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, was ranked first in Turkey. Coming first among a total number of eighteen projects that qualified for finals in the category of Product Development, Nakıp was presented his prize by Prof. Hasan Mandal, President of TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey).

Almost all of the fire detection systems on today’s market detect only smoke or fire, according to Nakıp. To inform us about his undergraduate degree project advised by Director of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences Prof. Cüneyt Güzeliş Nakıp also said, “The product that I have designed as part of my project advised by EDS Company, however, is intended to incorporate various sensors that detect different levels of gas, smoke, temperature, and humidity. The sensors then process such data by using artificial intelligence so the detectors report and react to a fire more correctly and fast. The project has also been deemed worthy of financial support from the TÜBİTAK 2209-B Undergraduate Degree Thesis for Industry Support Program. Such systems do not exist in Turkey, so they are being imported. Given that only a handful of big companies produce such systems, this product is expected to bring in economic benefits for the country, as well as for the firm that we are cooperating to produce the product’s prototype.”
