SOCIAL MEDIA NOW MANAGED BY ITS USERS

Though we have just recently met internet and social media, we feel like we have been on social media for decades. Such once-outstanding social media tools as MSN Messenger, ICQ, Yonja, mIRC have vanished although they were thought to be so innovative that they could never become obsolete. Asst. Prof. Ayda Sabuncuoğlu and Göker Gülay from Yaşar University’s Department of Public Relations and Advertising explained the reasons why those internet and social media tools, which were thought to be never forgotten, were all but forgotten while also discussing the new social media trends.

Reminding that websites like Facebook and Twitter started out as the social media settings which were being used mainly by the young starting from the end of the 2000s when they became a part of our lives, Asst. Prof. Ayda Sabuncuoğlu continued saying, “Adults, children, politicians as well as the marketing and business worlds followed the lead of this young generation, starting to use social media shortly after them. Lots of websites and tools have had a radical influence on how we use internet in recent years. Some of the social media tools which were initially thought to bring about a drastic change on social media in years have recently been shut down or their investments have been terminated. We have just bidden farewell to Vine, the platform which introduced numerous phenomena. Many applications and tools which were claimed to change the world, though, are yet to bring about the radical changes expected of them. Even Twitter is being blamed for not being able to expand fast enough and for not adapting itself to its users. Its stock has also seen the lowest value of the last 5 years. Such cases show that the users’ needs and expectations are changing over time and tools incapable of adapting themselves to these changes become out of favor.”

THE FUTURE OF SOCIAL MEDIA DETERMINED BY INTERNET VIDEOS

Expressing that there is one common point about the future of social media on which everyone can agree, Göker Gülay continued: “The point is the videos posted on internet. These videos, which have become as common as TV, are now the hot spot of viral marketing at the same time. Internet videos will conquer the online traffic in a few years to come. The first thing to be posted about any subject will be a video instead of a text or a photo.”
