THE AMAZONIANS OF YAŞAR UNIVERSITY

Women students from Yaşar University are the pride of our country in sports with their achievements in triathlon, wind surfing, athletics, and Ironman.

The national athlete Berfe Sancak, the national triathletes Ece Bakıcı and İpek Öztosun, and the windsurfer Fulya Ünlü are the epitomes of women’s success in sports. They show us that women can be at least as successful as men, if not even more so.

They are just some of the strong female athletes in Turkey, who have filled our country with pride and shown everyone true patience, perseverance and athletic hustle. Some proved their adequacy in athletics, some in windsurfing and some others in triathlon. The four achieved female athletes of Yaşar University shared their success stories, inspiring people of all ages. The national athlete Berfe Sancak, the national triathletes Ece Bakıcı and İpek Öztosun, and the windsurfer Fulya Ünlü expressed that women are more than a match for men.

WORLD CHAMPION FOR FOUR CONSECUTIVE YEARS

Fulya Ünlü, student at Yaşar University’s Department of International Logistics Management, set a record becoming the world champion in the youth category of the Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA) World Cup for four consecutive years. “Women windsurfers in Turkey achieve greater successes compared to men, and this is one of the best indicators that women can achieve anything they want,” stated Fulya Ünlü.

THE CHAMPION IN THE BALKANS AND TURKEY HOLDING THE BEST IRONMAN RECORD

The national triathlete Ece Bakıcı, who is also studying for a Masters of Business Administration at Yaşar University, picked up where she left off in nine months after a serious injury and proved that she could achieve anything, despite her physicians telling her that she might not even be able to walk again. Competing in the most challenging event in the world, Ironman, for the first time last year, Bakıcı won first place in her own age category and ranked second overall. Completing courses of 1.9 km of swimming, 90 km cycling and 21.1 km running in a time of 4:43:31, Bakıcı became the only Turkish athlete to achieve this record breaking score in Ironman. Ece Bakıcı said, “Because of how we are socially constructed, being an athlete is way more challenging for us as women. However, I am convinced that women can achieve anything so long as they are determined. We can be the best both as students and as working women, as well as in sports.”

SECOND IN EUROPE, CHAMPION IN BALKAN AND TURKEY

The biggest success which has been achieved by a Turkish triathlete so far belongs to the national triathlete İpek Öztosun, who is a student of Yaşar University’s Department of Mathematics. Öztosun also has numerous degrees in national and international arenas including second in Europe, champion of Turkey and the Balkans. Highlighting that women are very successful in every aspect of life, Öztosun continued saying, “A triathlon is relatively challenging. It is made up of swimming, running and cycling. It requires a great deal of effort. The scores we achieve are very close to the ones achieved by men. The highest score of Turkey in international triathlons belongs to me, and such a success has really raised the bar in triathlon for men to compete with.

SECOND IN THE BALKANS, RECORD-HOLDER OF TURKEY

The national athlete Berfe Sancak from the Department of Law at Yaşar University holds the U-23 records in 4×400 meters and 4×200 m as well as the Turkey Seniors record in 4×200 m. Sancak also came in second in 4×400 m with the national team, as well as becoming the champion in Turkey in the 60 m and 200 m. “I have been on tracks together with my mother for as long as I can remember, and she has been a very good role model for me. The more mothers are aware of things and have a say in life, the more women will be successful like us in sports or in any other field. Nothing is impossible for women as long as they try and do not withdraw themselves just because they deem their goal impossible,” expressed Berfe Sancak, pointing out that her success is closely bound up with the women who she has always seen as her personal role models.
